DE PERE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The push to vaccinate college students is getting more creative as a new school year quickly approaches.
Wisconsin college leaders say it’s unlikely vaccine incentives would divide vaccinated and unvaccinated students.
“I don’t think so,” said University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh chancellor Andrew Leavitt.
“That is not something I’ve seen so far,” said UW-Eau Claire vice chancellor Grace Crickette.
“We don’t want to rule those students out.” said Julie Massey, chief of staff at St. Norbert College.
Getting a COVID-19 vaccine is headed to the top of the back to school list.
And prizes from scholarships to iPads could be the reward. It’s all an effort to meet vaccine thresholds upward of 70% of students in colleges and universities across Wisconsin.
“T-shirts, bucket hats, ten $1,000 scholarships we want to give out to those who have been vaccinated” Leavitt said.
iPads, electronics, 50 $1,000 tuition scholarship awards — and there’s more,” Crickette said.

Those rewards are on top of scholarships the UW System will be handing out to certain vaccinated students. But at St. Norbert College, the college is working on a program that includes unvaccinated students.
“Who have cooperated with all the requirements in the drawing,” Massey said. “So we understand there may be some number of students who medically are not advised by their own primary care physician to pursue vaccination.”
Massey says the school is still working on its incentives, after letting students vote through a survey.
“Two tickets to a Packers home game.”
But those prizes, not only for SNC, but UWO and Eau Claire, aren’t expected to be handed out until mid-October.
