MADISON, WI (WTAQ) — Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Officials officials are on the lookout for a mysterious illness that has been killing songbirds in the eastern Midwest.
Dr. Lindsey Long is a veterinarian with the DNR and says it hasn’t been seen in Wisconsin yet, but they’re staying vigilant.
“There is an illness that they’re trying to investigate that mostly impacts juvenile or or fledgling crackles, blue jays, robins and starlings.”
Long told WTAQ. “We are making sure to stay updated if anyone sees anything.”
The illness has a number of specific symptoms you can watch out for.
“They can get very, very swollen eyes,” Long said. “Sometimes with crust, and sometimes show incoordination.”
The illness has been detected in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana.
A Madison area Audubon society is suggesting residents take down their bird feeders as a precaution, but Long says the DNR isn’t making that recommendation just yet.
It’s not clear if it’s contagious or if it’s being transmitted through something the birds are eating.
If you see an unusual amount of dead songbirds in your area, you’re encouraged to contact DNR officials.
