African Swine Fever (ASF) hit China hard in 2018 and 2019 by taking out almost half of the country’s hog herd and it’s spreading once again. Officials say there’s a giant amount of pigs dying from ASF specifically in northern China and they’re worried that it could spread to the southern part of the country.
Smaller farmers are being blamed for seeing the biggest spread due to not being able to afford many safety measures or having very relaxed protocols on their farms. Just as hog farmers started to rebuild over the past year, the Chinese pork industry may be in danger again.
