GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — It’s been nearly a week since Green Bay’s Mason Street Bridge suffered a serious mechanical failure and became stuck open.
WisDOT’s Mark Kantola says they aren’t any closer to knowing how soon the bridge might reopen.
“The bridge engineers are under there trying to determine the problem to make sure that it doesn’t happen again,” Kantola told WTAQ. “Then once that’s assessed they’ll work on a fix.”
The failure was in the main gear on the bridge’s east side. Something caused the gears to become dislodged from each other, but engineers still aren’t sure what caused it. Until they know, repairs cannot begin.
“Hopefully we’ll know more by the end of the week on a timeline to get the bridge down and have vehicle traffic go by,” said Kantola.
The bridge was secured in an open position last week to allow ships to pass underneath.
