APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The Appleton Police Department is honoring officers who bravely responded to a shooting at the Fox River Mall.
On Jan. 31, officers received initial reports of an active shooter inside the mall with multiple victims.
Officer Lerum, who was off-duty at the time, was inside the mall and immediately took action by getting his firearm from his vehicle and went back into the mall to engage the shooter. He also attempted to provide medical attention to one of the victims and provided vital information to arriving officers.
Police say the remaining listed officers, “immediately responded without hesitation and entered the mall prepared to engage the active shooter. Once in the mall, the response was systematic and effective, especially given the size of the venue. Their response was inline with the training that they received for this type of threat.”
They are: Lieutenant Holdorf, Lieutenant Vander Wielen, Sergeant Miles, Sergeant Edwards, Sergeant Knauer, Sergeant Fischer, Lieutenant Allaback, Officer Christensen, Officer Allen, Officer Hughes, Officer Patek, Officer Norris, Officer Zieman and Officer Wassink.
The department added, “their actions prioritized civilian lives, disregarding their own personal safety and worthy of recognition.”
All officers who responded were recognized with a Distinguished Service Award.
