GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — Governor Tony Evers hasn’t given away his intentions in signing or vetoing all or parts of the $87.5 billion state budget sent to his desk this week.
Brett Healy, the President of the MacIver Institute, told WTAQ’s ‘The Morning News with Matt and Earl’ that he thinks the Democratic Governor will ultimately approve the bill devised by the Republican led legislature. It includes a large tax cut totaling around $2.4 billion.
“[I think] he would love to run on the idea that he’s a Democrat who believes in tax cuts,” said Healy. “And there’s still all that federal money coming into the state.”
The bill was passed on Wednesday, and it was passed with some level of bipartisan support.
“We saw this week seven Democrats in the legislature voted for the budget,” Healy said. “I think that sends a signal that they know governor Evers is intending to sign it.”
There are still a few sticking points, including education spending, which was increased. Some education groups have criticized the source of that funding, however: it comes from federal COVID-19 relief money.
Evers said Thursday that he has yet to read the budget. It includes a large tax cut totaling around $2.4 billion.
