DE PERE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Definitely De Pere kicked off the downtown’s first farmers market for the 2021 season on Thursday.
Vendors selling produce products says the dry heat has likely pushed back the growing season for certain products.
The De Pere farmer’s market has returned, bringing music, handmade items, and fresh produce back to the streets of Downtown De Pere.
“Well we picked up some onions, and we’re probably going to pick up some other vegetables like radishes,” said Ashley French of De Pere.
Vegetables, will likely be the bulk of the produce you’ll find at the farmers market for a few more weeks.
Joe Terrien with Kellner Back Acre Garden says because of the recent heat, and a late season frost, fruits may come just about three weeks later than usual.
He tells FOX they could use some rain.
“The fruits need that more temperament weather and moisture. Fruits come a little later anyways, like blueberries should be coming soon raspberries should be coming soon but that’s a little pushed back because of the heat.”
As for growing grains, Monique Herzog tells FOX 11 their farm has been unbothered by the hot temperatures for the most part.
“Like rye will grow pretty well in anything, buckwheat is really hearty too we just planted an acreage of that, waiting for it to come up. Some of those crops seem to do ok unless we had a real real extreme drought.”
She says some rain wouldn’t hurt though for her beehives that produce honey she sells at the market.
As for the shoppers, they don’t mind the options available to them.
“Right now it all looks good,” said French.
Definitely De Pere hosts the weekly farmer’s market. It takes place Thursday evenings at George Street Plaza and runs until September 23, 2021.
