GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A judge approved a prosecutor’s request Wednesday to increase the severity of charges against Abdi Ahmed for a traffic crash which killed three people.
Ahmed, 23, pleaded not guilty to three counts of first-degree reckless homicide for the June 28 crash on Lombardi Avenue which killed Jessie Saldana, 28; Sonia Gonzalez-Guillen, 27; and Sonia Gonzalez, 57.
Trial was set for Nov. 9. It’s scheduled for the entire week.
Ahmed had been charged with second-degree reckless homicide, but that was changed to first-degree reckless homicide. Instead of a maximum of 25 years in prison for each count, the maximum penalty is now 60 years in prison on each, if convicted.
The criminal complaint alleges Ahmed was driving 104 miles per hour 1.2 seconds before the airbag deployed in his Dodge Charger. Data from the airbag computer module also shows the brake was engaged only 1.1 seconds before the airbag went off. The data shows the car was traveling 84 mph the tenth of a second before the airbag deployed.
