GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — The ‘New Normal’ is looking a lot like the ‘Old Normal’ at Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport.
The COVID-19 travel dip appears to be nearly over.
“The leisure market is back to, kind of, where it was in 2019 and before” Airport Director Marty Piette told WTAQ. “And business travel is coming back.”
Travel picked up at Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport over Memorial Day weekend, to a level even higher than many pre-pandemic memorial day weekends. Piette says pent-up travel demand turned what is usually a ‘driving holiday’ into one that saw a bump in air travel, too.
“We saw a pretty decent uptick…it was a busy weekend all through Friday,” he said Wednesday.
Travel to areas in the Western US, such a Colorado, is particularly popular for vacationers.
“We’re expecting to continue to see these increases,” Piette said. “We are tracking national numbers, and the number of passengers screened nationally continues to increase.”
Masks are still required onboard flights and inside airports, that will continue until September at the earliest.
