FOND DU LAC COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The new CDC guidelines are suggesting schools stick to their current COVID policies. That includes continuing to wear masks and socially distance.
With coronavirus vaccines only available to those 12 and older, the CDC says that leaves millions of school-age children vulnerable to transmitting the virus. That being said, although several adults are now able to take off their masks, if they’re fully vaccinated, the agency still recommends that schools maintain mask-wearing policies.
And for many schools, that’s okay by them.
“The board made a decision that we’re staying with our masks until the end of the year. We’re talking 14 days, right?” said Aaron Sadoff, superintendent for the School District of North Fond du Lac. “Then the summer school through August, or through June, we’re still going to have our face coverings on when we’re inside, but then we’ll figure it out.”
Sadoff says, he thinks the CDC’s new recommendations for schools are a good idea.
“Since we don’t have all of our students that are vaccinated, or could be vaccinated, I think it’s a smart thing to do,” he said. “As far as wearing the mask, as an adult, even though we’re fully vaccinated, a lot of that comes down to just role modeling, and doing the best that we can, in order to maintain order.”
In a statement, the Oshkosh Area School District says,
For the remainder of the 2020-21 school year, the Oshkosh Area School District will continue its current practice of requiring students, staff, and visitors to wear face masks/coverings in all schools and district facilities.
Starting Monday, and for the remainder of the school year, students and staff in the Appleton Area School District may remove their masks while outside on school grounds during the school day. But masks are still required inside all school and district buildings and on buses.
“It’s all about just being practical and being patient, because I can envision a future that we’re not going to need all these mitigating factors, and we’re gonna be okay,” said Sadoff.
FOX 11 also reached out to Kimberly School District. Officials there tell us they also plan to continue following CDC guidelines.
