TIGERTON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — In the Shawano County village of Tigerton, there hasn’t been school for the past few days. A yet-unexplained network disruption at the Tigerton School District has kept kids out of class since Wednesday. Lindsay Tessmer’s kids have a five-day weekend.
“They’ve been off for like half a week now,” she said. “Just trying to find stuff for them to do.”
It put Ireland Miller on babysitting duty.
“There’s just a couple weeks left so I’m not going to let it bother me,” she said with a shrug.
With little information as to what caused the disruption and why it’s lasted this long, Tessmer and Miller have questions.
Although both believe the lack of details aren’t intentional.
“I think they’re just doing what they can, I mean with what they know, but yeah in the back of your mind you want answers,” admitted Tessmer.
But patience for ‘doing all they can’ isn’t a sentiment shared among everyone. Some parents want more information than the district has provided.
In a statement, superintendent Kelley Strike writes the following:
“On May 11, 2021, Tigerton School District experienced a computer network disruption that impacted our ability to access certain District systems. We immediately began an investigation, and have been actively working with third-party specialists to determine the full nature and scope of the disruption. Our top priority continues to be the secure restoration of systems and internet access so that we can return to regular classroom instruction. At this time, we advised our Tigerton Community that we intend to have all students back in the building on Monday, May 17th until the completion of the school year on May 28th.
As part of our response, we notified law enforcement of this incident. Because our investigation is ongoing, we are unable to provide specific details of the incident at this time. However, we anticipate having additional information early next week and will provide an update to the Community at that time. The District appreciates everyone’s ongoing patience and understanding as we continue to respond to this incident.
Dr. Kelley Strike, Superintendent/Principal”
For now the plan is for class to be back in session Monday.
