GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — Green Bay Police are warning of another scam.
This one is from fraudsters claiming to be the IRS, or even Green Bay Police. They’re calling and telling victims they have an “IRS warrant” out for their arrest and demand payment in gift cards.
Police Commander Kevin Warych says you should hang up on those callers.
“People fall victim of these crimes every day,” said Warych. “And we just really want to put a message to the community to protect themselves and not buy gift cards or send money to people that they don’t know.”
He says other than the gift card demands, there are a few other red flags to watch out for.
“The IRS will not call you, the social security office will not call you and ask for money,” said Warych. “Also, when you get these phone calls and the voice is automated, like a computer, that’s another big red flag.”
If you’ve been taken advantage of, contact police–Warych says it’s difficult, but possible, to recover funds before they’re stolen for good.
