GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — It’s hard to imagine given what we’ve been paying the last few weeks, but a year ago gas prices were the lowest they’ve been in a generation.
“The average price per gallon of gasoline across Green Bay was $1.03,” said GasBuddy’s Patrick DeHaan. “Meaning there was a few stations at $1.09 and many other stations that were under $1.”
Many people managed to fill up for around $0.99 in Green Bay. Elsewhere in the state, gas got as low as $0.79.
The cratering of gas prices stemmed from a serious drop in gasoline demand as a result of the early Coronavirus pandemic, and the travel and business restrictions that came with it.
“At the bottom of things, national gasoline consumption had fallen by more than half,” said DeHaan. “I believe it was down 60% compared to normal levels.”
That included a serious drop in airline fuel use.
It’s a drop DeHaan says likely will never happen again, barring another pandemic.
Gas is now around $2.75.
