OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – People in Oshkosh were out Tuesday evening rallying in response to Derek Chauvin being found guilty in the murder of George Floyd. Like many, they said finding Chauvin guilty was the right decision.
At the Sundial in Downtown Oshkosh, a group of people gathered, not even an hour after the guilty verdict was announced.
Ciara Hill heard the news while picking up her three year old daughter from pre-school.
“I was just crying because it’s been a long time coming. There’s been so many disappointments. So I was shocked, I was happy, and it kind of gave me hope as well.”
She tells FOX 11 it’s been an overwhelming year.
“I’ve had so many different emotions, I’ve been angry, I’ve been sad, I’ve been devoted more than ever in advocating for the black community. Especially black children and black women.”
Sophia Wenzel says the news was something to celebrate.
“I’m so happy for George Floyd’s family and for everyone to finally get some justice for police violence.”
But along with the good news, she says also comes a harsh reality she wants people to recognize.
“I’m very sad for all the families whose victims names aren’t being said, the ones that haven’t gotten justice,” said Wenzel. “I think it’s a bigger issue.”
Working on solving that ‘bigger issue’ is why Wenzel tells FOX 11 they continue to rally together.
“We really want to educate the community on potential changes that can be made as well to let everybody know we’re not done.”
Ciara Hill wants to see those changes made right here in Oshkosh.
“Local government, and local law enforcement especially right here in Oshkosh take action and work with the black communities to come up with solutions. To be proactive, not reactive.”
And that the work needed, is a work in progress.
“It’s not a one time thing, there needs to be continuing education because things are always evolving.”
Organizers say they’re planning on gathering in Appleton today.
