MARINETTE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The head of the U.S. Navy is checking on the progress in Marinette.
Last year, Fincantieri Marinette Marine was awarded a contract with the Navy to construct their new frigate-class ships.
U.S. Navy Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Mike Gilday tells FOX 11 Marinette Marine has a long history of producing world-class ships for the Navy.
“In terms of where we are right now with Constellation, we are on track right now with the design phase for the company to begin bending metal later this year and begin construction. I’m very confident that we’re on track there.”
Along with the contract comes job opportunities.
“So across our enterprise we’re hiring direct about 1000 employees between us and Bay Ship,” Fincantieri Marinette Marine CEO Jan Allman said.
Allman tells FOX 11 it’s rewarding to be able to provide job stability for the community.
In terms of employment, Marinette Marine says it doesn’t only positively impact Wisconsinites.
40% of their workforce comes from Michigan.
Admiral Gilday says his biggest takeaway from his visit was the people.
“They’re dedicated, but they’re also very innovative. You get a feeling of, these are just patriots, they’re doing this work because they love what they’re doing, they’re proud of what they’re doing, and they’re proud of the United States Navy and the United States of America.”
Fincantieri was awarded a nearly $800 million initial contract to build the Navy’s new frigate.
