MARINETTE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Imagine waking up and finding in your backyard walls of ice piled up 10, 15, 20 feet or even higher.
That’s exactly what happened to residents along West Bay Shore Street in Marinette early Thursday morning.
Linda Phillips tells FOX 11 howling winds woke her up, but the growing ice shoves kept her up.
“About 2 o clock last night I woke up because the wind was blowing so hard, and I thought, well this is something. By 4 o clock I was out here watching, and it was just moving. You could literally the earth move under your feet. It was fun. And I just think it’s awesome.”
Thankfully for Phillips, the shoves stopped short of her home.
In fact, the ice seems to have stopped short of doing any significant damage here.
Two doors down, Tim Pleger tells FOX 11 they may have lost a couple bird feeders, but otherwise…
“It’s hard to say because everything is covered. But the beach is torn up a little bit, and I think some of our rip rap has gotten pushed back into yard. So we’ll have to reposition that. But other than that, it seems like we’re okay so far.”
And now, while neighbor Christine Longlais says the ice is beautiful, she doesn’t necessarily want it to stick around.
“I think we’re just praying for a lot of warm weather and sun. Hot sun. And if anybody needs free ice, we’re giving it away.”
Ice shoves were also found around the bay and up the Door county Peninsula.
Huge mounds of ice pieces piled up near Brussels, but those thankfully stayed a bit offshore.
