GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Catholic schools in the Green Bay diocese say they’re seeing a rise in interest in the voucher program this year.
Todd Blahnik, the diocese’s superintendent of Catholic schools, says applications for the Wisconsin School Choice Program are up 10-15% over the same time last year.
He credits the schools’ ability to offer in-person classes during the coronavirus pandemic, when many public schools were all remote.
“It was definitely a roller coaster at first,” Blahnik said in a news release. “I think every day for the first few months there were questions. But after Christmas break, we have hardly received any calls. That is a true testament to our teachers and administrators who spent their entire summer creating safety procedures.”
Blahnik says many area Catholic schools already have as many voucher applicants now as they had total voucher students enrolled all last year.
School voucher applications are open through April 15.
