WAUPACA CO, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – One Waupaca County woman is bringing attention to suicide prevention, by running.
Abbi Williams celebrated her 18th birthday Tuesday, and ran 18 miles throughout the county.
Williams started a GoFundMe page to donate money to the Waupaca County Suicide Prevention Coalition for the cause.
She tells FOX 11 it’s a cause that’s important to her.
“There’s a stigma around mental health, and bringing awareness to it, and raising funds for it will help prevent suicide.”
Her friends and family cheered her on the whole way.
“They got me through the 18 miles. Without them, it would have been pretty rough. They were there all 18 miles from the start, and it definitely helped,” Willams added.
Williams says she was inspired by a man from California who ran 37 miles on his 37th birthday last year, and raised money for a non-profit organization which raises money for rare cancer research and empowers people diagnosed with rare cancers.
She launched her GoFundMe last month. In that time, she has raised nearly $3,000 for the Waupaca County Suicide Prevention Coalition.
