LAKE WINNEBAGO, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — On day 10 of the 2021 sturgeon spearing season, Lake Winnebago reached the highest season harvest total since 2015, according to the state Department of Natural Resources.
Lake Winnebago reached a season total of 1,266 fish harvested on Monday.
2015’s season on Lake Winnebago lasted 10 days with a harvest total of 1,870 fish, per the DNR.
The DNR says just 24 sturgeon were harvested Monday, the lowest daily harvest of the season.
Stockbridge Harbor’s registration station registered the most sturgeon Monday with 7 fish for a station total of 266 on the season.
Jason Hammel speared the largest fish Monday with a 97.5 pound, 72 inch F4 female registered at the Grundman Lane station.
201 juvenile females, 556 adult females and 469 males have been speared along Lake Winnebago in 2021.
Monday’s harvest consisted of two juvenile females, 13 adult females and nine adult males.
The DNR says Monday’s low total is likely due to a large reduction in spearing effort on Lake Winnebago.
The Lake Winnebago or system-wide trigger sits at 109 juvenile females, 214 adult females and 366 males as the DNR anticipates 2021’s season to go the full 16 days.
