GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – With the Green Bay School Board decision to resume classes March 1st comes another issue for the city. Finding people to staff the school crossings across town.
Green Bay Police Commander Kevin Warych says crossing guards perform a vital safety function for the community.
“With the schools going back into session March 1st, we really want to put the message out to the community that if you’ve ever considered becoming a crossing guard it’s a very positive experience.”
Warych says crossing guard staffing has been an issue in the past…but coming back from a pandemic caused layoff has made it even more challenging.
“For the last couple of months we have been working very hard to get a good group of people to be the the crossing guards at these intersections.”
Warych says parents shouldn’t worry. Any school crossings that do not have a guard staffing them will be covered by a Green Bay Police or Community Service officer.
Crossing guards work 2 to 3 hours a day while school is in session and typically make $15 an hour. Find out more details on the hours, the duties and qualifications here or contact Green Bay Police.
