LENA, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Oconto County’s snowmobile trails are opening up this weekend and people tell us they’ve been waiting all Winter for this.
For some, waiting for Oconto County’s snowmobile trails to open up, just wasn’t an option.
Jenny Zillmer of De Pere said, “we trucked all the way up to Michigan last weekend and drove 4 hours.”
But, plenty of people are excited about the fresh snow from this week’s snow storm.
“It’s a blast, I don’t know it’s an adrenaline rush,” Neal Wallace of Oconomowoc said.
No longer needing to travel is also a plus.
“We drove 4 hours last weekend just to find snow and the trails were really rough,” said Shailler Zillmer, of De Pere.
“It gets expensive traveling all the way up there,” said Merduardt.
People tell us they’re not only excited to finally be snowmobiling here in Lena, but to also be supporting the local businesses along the way.
“It’s nice to finally be able to spend some money at these businesses that have been hurting all summer and into the winter,” said Shailler Zillmer. “We’re doing our part, my wife and I, we’re just going to enjoy the weekend and do our part.”
They’re doing their part at Ray’s Boneyard, which is a change of pace amid the pandemic.
“We’ve been stuck in the house almost a year now it’s nice to get out and get some fresh air,” said Jenny Zillmer.
Even with a late start, there’s hope the season won’t end anytime soon.
“We do have a lot of snow and with this cold weather I do anticipate the trials will remain open maybe a little longer this year,” said Roy Lawernz with Bagley and Brazeau Joyriders Snowmobile Club.
Outagamie County’s snowmobile trails will also be opening up Sunday at sunrise. The Park system says their trails are in good, fair conditions.
