OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ) — The Sturgeon are going to be ripe for the spearing this year.
That’s what Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Sturgeon Biologist Ryan Koenigs thinks. Clear water on Lake Winnebago could mean success this year.
“We’re anticipating an increased harvest,” Koenigs said. “Likely a shortened season. How short it may be? We’re just going to have to wait until we get into opening weekend and that first week to see how many fish are actually being harvested.”
Clarity of around 12 feet down, on average, is being reported on the lake, getting to around 16 feet in spots.
“Water clarity is the best indicator for spearing season success,” said Koenigs. “So conditions are lining up for a successful season this year after four or five years of relatively dirty water.”
This year, sturgeon registration will be a touchless experience due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Spearers will be required to stay in their vehicles during the entire registration process and keep their fish in an accessible place to staff, keeping their registration information on hand during the process while their catch is weighed.
The spearing season starts February 13th.
