According to a statement issued on February 1st, a U.S. Congress panel is investigating meatpacking plant COVID-19 outbreaks.
The House of Representatives Coronavirus Subcommittee reached out to JBS USA, Tyson Foods, and Smithfield Foods asking them to provide the Subcommittee with any records of inspections and other documentation that could help the investigation. They also asked OSHA to show documents proving what they did to enforce safety rules at the packing plants.
Chief Administrative Officer at Smithfield Foods, Keira Lombardo, said that the company looks forward to clearing things up and giving the Subcommittee the correct information.
Smithfield Foods claims they’ve put over $700 million toward protecting their employees during the pandemic, while JBS USA says they’ve spent over $200 million to keep workers safe.
