GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – FBI officials are warning of protests at all 50 state capitols, and other government buildings, leading up to the presidential inauguration.
Locally, the Green Bay mayor says there have been threats to Brown County.
After the scene that played out at the Nation’s Capitol on Jan. 6, Congressman Mike Gallagher tells FOX 11 precautions are being taken ahead of Inauguration Day on Wednesday.
“There is a very heavy National Guard presence, they have kind of locked down the entire perimeter and extended it around the Capital. I think it is important that we have it, but I understand it will be reduced participation and I hope that everyone is safe.”
In Green Bay, Mayor Eric Gingrich tells FOX 11 he is working on a security plan for City Hall with the Police Chief Andrew Smith.
“There has been some generalized threats throughout the country directed towards courthouses and city halls and state capitols unfortunately, so we are monitoring all of that and developing an appropriate security plan for Wednesday.”
Part of the security plan is to keep city employees home.
“We are going to try and maximize the amount of people working from home on Wednesday,” said Genrich.
At the state capitol in Madison, the Wisconsin National Guard has been deployed.
The Department of Administration declined to comment on specific plans to deal with potential armed protests, but on Sunday issued a statement saying,
‘The Capitol will maintain an increased law enforcement presence as we continue to monitor this evolving situation.’
“Everyone exercises an extra degree of caution,” said Gallagher.
So far, no arrests or protests have been reported at the state capitol this week.
