KAUKAUNA, WI (WTAQ) — It’s a good weekend to see our national bird in flight.
Saturday is Eagle Days at 1000 Islands Environmental Center in Kaukauna, where you’re almost sure to see a bald eagle or 12.
“You can generally see around two dozen eagles if you don’t spend a whole lot of time looking,” said Debbie Nowak, the naturalist and director at 1000 Islands Environmental Center.
“The reason we do Eagle Days in January is because that’s the height of our winter eagle population,” said Nowak. “This year has been a pretty good eagle viewing year for us.”
The eagles enjoy the Fox Valley during January due to the change in the Fox River’s elevation causing open water to form. Open water, to the predatory bald eagle, means fish.
There will be plenty to see and do, even with pandemic precautions in place. The nature center is closed, masks and social distancing will be in place.
“We’ll have some spotting scopes and some binoculars for people to use, we’ll have a nice information station set up by the information center,” said Nowak.
If that doesn’t convince you, they also have free hot chocolate.
Eagle Days will be hosted from sunrise to sunset on Saturday.
