WASHINGTON, DC (WTAQ) — Officials from both parties across the state of Wisconsin decried Wednesday’s events at the US Capitol Building in Washington, DC, where the US Capitol building was stormed by attendee’s of the “Stop the Steal” rally in support of President Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election.
In a press statement, Governor Tony Evers said “As are so many Wisconsinites and Americans, I am watching these horrifying events unfold in Washington, D.C. in disbelief. The peaceful transfer of power is at the very heart of our government and our country. This is an attack on our democracy. Period.”
“There must be swift, bipartisan condemnation in no uncertain terms–by the president, by elected officials who’ve sought to sow division and distrust in our election, by elected officials who’ve failed to unequivocally denounce these efforts, all of which fed into today’s events,” he continued.

Attorney General Josh Kaul had even harsher words.
“It’s difficult to believe what we’re seeing take place at the U.S. Capitol: a fascist riot incited by a lame-duck President desperately and illegitimately trying to cling to power based on absurd lies about the election that amount to voter fraud McCarthyism,” Kaul said in a statement. “Those responsible must be held accountable for what appears to be a seditious conspiracy under federal law.”
Republican 8th District Representative Mike Gallagher called the events “banana republic crap” and called on President Donald Trump to condemn it.
We are witnessing absolute banana republic crap in the United States Capitol right now. @realdonaldtrump, you need to call this off. pic.twitter.com/0QGx2PlXFY

Republican US Senator Ron Johnson asked demonstrators to disperse.
Please, if you are in or around the Capitol, respect law enforcement and peacefully disperse.

Democratic Senator Tammy Baldwin tweeted as unrest began, placing the blame squarely on President Trump.
I am safe, but it’s disgraceful that our country has to experience this violence because of Trump’s lies, conspiracies and un-American attacks on our Democracy.

Protesters were cleared from the capitol about four hours after the unrest began.
