BROWN COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – UWGB admissions says COVID isn’t just impacting prospective students.
“This has not been their fault. COVID has impacted them the same way it has impacted us as professionals. It’s been a challenge,” UWGB executive director of admissions Rachele Bakic said.
The pandemic has pushed some college admissions departments to be flexible.
Both St. Norbert College and all UW system schools waived their standardized testing requirements temporarily.
St. Norbert associate director of admission Eric Wagner tells FOX 11….
“Looking at the strength of schedule, classes that they’ve taken and their grades all the way through high school, but still looking for letters of recommendation, things that they’ve been involved in. The academic standard hasn’t changed.”
“Higher education institutions have had to become just as flexible and nimble based on the changes that are happening at K-12,” Bakic said.
For some districts, one of those changes is the required credits for graduation.
The Green Bay School District recently lowered its requirements from 22 credits to the state-mandated 15.
“If you’re a senior and you may be struggling and you want to make sure that you’re still going to graduate here in May, so being able to work with your counselor and look at your post-secondary plan… there’s a lot that kind of goes into that but again it’s about providing those options,” Green Bay schools executive director of secondary schools Judy Wiegand said.
“You know every single student is so different and coming from a different district you have some schools that are over 2000 students in their high school in Wisconsin versus a couple high schools that have only a couple dozen in their class, and of course homeschooled students. We’re really looking at the holistic student for the full four years they’ve been in high school to ensure that we can make sure that they are ready for higher education and what we demand of them,” Wagner said.
UWGB admissions wants to remind students that the work they do in high school is very important, and they should have a plan to meet the units required for high school graduation and college acceptance.
