GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — A state assemblyman is calling for the closure of the Green Bay Correctional Institution.
Republican Assemblyman David Steffen is doubling down on calls he’s made previously after an independent report suggested the 122 year old prison is past its operational lifespan.
“There have been situations where the locks aren’t working, the HVAC isn’t working, the plumbing has failed, the sewer system’s failed,” Steffen told WTAQ. “Eventually it’s going to have a catastrophic failure.”
As such, he’s calling for it to be closed as soon as possible, either shipping the inmates elsewhere or replacing it with a new facility.
“It is no longer a debate,” Steffen said. “It’s time for [GBCI] to be closed.”
Steffen is was in Madison Tuesday in an effort to speak to other lawmakers about the situation.
