GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Some Green Bay students will return to a classroom as early as Thursday. The board last night approved adjustments to its gating criteria, for specialized courses, activities, and extra curriculars.
It’s what parents demanded on Saturday just outside the District office.
One parent, Amy McNally said, “we want to support opening the Green Bay Schools because virtual has been going on for way too long.”
It’s also what many parents, like Jamie Jacques, continue to demand at Green Bay School’s board meeting.
“If you give the opportunity for some of us to be able to go back to school, we’re not saying open up the school and make everyone go back to school, but please leave the option out there”
Now the board is looking to revisit gating criteria. But, it’s not just from parents demands.
“We have been listening to students, staff, to families throughout the community,” said Superintendent Stephen Murley.
The readjusted gating criteria would allow some specialized classes to resume in person learning as soon as Thursday. Over 40 courses like automotive, agriculture, and art could move back to an on site model.
“They’re specialized courses for which we could not meet specific either needs of the entire course or parts of the entire course in an online environment,” said Murley.
The adjustment also allows co-curricular, athletics, and other activities to return next week,
“They’ll go through the same kind of application process that specialized courses do,” said Murley, “they’ll do health and safety overview, equity overview, and administration overview.”
While parents want more than just these groups back in the class, “allow all students, not just a few select groups the opportunity tog et the excellent education Green Bay Public Schools it says it offers.” said parent Bridgette Legois.
Not all parents do.
Edwin Fredricks said, “classroom teachers can’t reach with any consistency.”
The board’s agenda also included suspending board polices for graduation requirements due to COVID-19.
