University of California’s Farm Advisors may have found a successful new weed control option for farmers. They’ve been using a steaming system to stop weeds and it’s been working. What happens is the steam heats up the soil to about 150°F, which kills weed seeds before they have a chance to grow. The team was testing the steam on lettuce and spinach fields and had a 90% success rate. They might have some improvements to make, but they’re on to something.
