APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) — Masks are mandatory in the state of Wisconsin and likely will be for some time, but some masks aren’t doing much to combat the spread of COVID-19.
Masks with air vents or masks that fit loosely aren’t doing much, so says Dr. Mark Cockley, the Chief Clinical Officer at Thedacare.
“What you’re trying to do [with masks] is trying to protect other people from respiratory particles that come out from you breathing or coughing,” Cockley said this week.
“If they have that little valve that makes it easier to breath, that doesn’t provide nearly as much protection for people around you, because the air can go right out that valve and the droplets will increase the spread.”
He says the best masks fit tight and have a metal bar on the nose that forms to your face along with some form of filtration. Masks like N95 respirators provide the most protection against transmission.
