GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — Some parents in the Green Bay school district are circulating a petition online in hopes of reopen schools in Green Bay.
Brook Andrews has two kids in the district and says virtual learning has been a struggle, with technical issues and frustration leading to emotional meltdowns.
“I would say that my children and I both were all struggling mightily,” she told WTAQ. “Lots of meltdowns in the house. Lots of technical difficulties with the computers.”
Andrews tells WTAQ that many of the technical problems have been resolved, but a lot of frustration remains.
She’s started a Facebook group which has launched the petition to return to some form of in-person class.
“The mission is to get some of the kids back in school, it’s not to get all of the kids back in school,” Andrews explained. “The mission is to get those that want to be back in school, back in school.”
The Facebook group, called “Open Green Bay Area Public Schools”, has a little under 760 members as of press time, but Andrews says not all of them are supporters.
“We’re aware that we have some people on our page who are not in support,” Andrews said. “Namely union members and other teachers that don’t agree with us.”
Andrews says the petition was created in part to gauge the level of support amongst parents and apply pressure to the school board. She says “one or two” members of the board sympathize with them, but didn’t mention names.
Some parents plan to address the board during their Monday board meeting.
