APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) – The State of Wisconsin is certifying election results from all 72 counties. All election results are expected to be submitted by the end of the day Tuesday.
“The county canvasses certify the unofficial results. So we go by reporting unit, by contest, by candidate and look at the physical evidence from the election that the municipalities provide us…That means we look at their poll books, we look at the tally tapes, and at write-in tallies – and then make adjustments from those from the unofficial results,” said Outagamie County Executive Lori O’Bright. “The municipalities provide the unofficial results via either phone call or most of them are through modem and those official results are what are posted on election night.”
Outagamie County certified their results on Tuesday of last week. Brown County filed their canvass to the state today.
“The county’s canvass is the second part of a three-part canvass process,” O’Bright said. “The state reviews all 72 counties to determine the accuracy of their county efforts, and if they have any questions, they’ll let us know.”
But if the Trump campaign files for a recount by the 5:00pm CST deadline on Wednesday, the counties will be called to return to action. O’Bright says they’re ready for the challenge.
“If there is a recount we’re going to do it in a combination meaning mostly with high speed tabulating equipment but there will be a few units that will be hand-counting,” O’Bright told WTAQ News. “The process for recounting is – you actually are now reviewing the actual ballots. So you’re opening up the ballot containers and counting the number of ballots. You’re comparing to poll list and determining the number of voters. You’re reviewing the absentee materials, that would include the absentee certificate envelope and the number of absentee ballots counted in the ballot containers.”
Counties would need to begin the process by 9:00am on Saturday, November 21st. The deadline to complete the recount would then be December 1st.
