After leaving the service, some veterans can struggle with getting back into civilian life and having some sense of normalcy. That’s where the Farmer Veteran Coalition can help out. The non-profit’s goal is to simply help veterans get into agriculture. The coalition wants to make sure that after serving, these veterans don’t fall through the cracks by struggling to find a place to belong. A spokesperson for the coalition was explaining how veterans want to do something with a purpose and agriculture’s the perfect outlet for them. This gives veterans the opportunity to help feed the community and the world, it’s another mission in life.
A study was done that showed how farming can help veterans who struggle with PTSD. Luckily, the Veterans Administration Hospital is beginning to realize how true that is. They’ve started catching on to the fact that being out in the country is good therapy for veterans. One way the coalition helps with that is by matching farmers who need workers with veterans who want to farm. Agriculture is hard work, it’s physically and mentally demanding, and so is the service. If you or someone you know is a veteran who may be looking for something in the ag industry, feel free to reach out! We appreciate everything our veterans have done for us and we want to make sure to help them out where we can. The Farmer Veteran Coalition recently posted a grant on their Facebook page available for livestock and poultry farmers. The applications are due on December 1st.
