APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The Appleton school board met Monday night to discuss how the district’s “Fully Virtual Plus” model is going.
The model allows for small groups of students to come to school for academic support during the school day.
At the district office, some parents and students protested, saying the district still isn’t doing enough.
“We’re just asking to be able to make the parental choice for our children to have the highest quality of education that you can receive,” Appleton parent Andrea Klitzke said.
Parents, like Amber McGinley, tell FOX 11 they want the district to know they are not going away.
“This is going to continue until they do what’s best for every student every day.”
“We keep fighting. We’re not going to give up,” Klitzke said.
Some board members, like Barry O’Connor, say they want to do what’s best for the kids.
“We really care about the kids and we’re trying to make the best decision.”
Others sympathize with parents.
“There are both sides to the story, but walk in these parents shoes and you’ll understand a lot better,” Appleton school board member Deborah Truyman said.
Some are just happy to see some advances towards bringing students back to the classroom.
“I’m very glad to hear we are doing everything we can to create more opportunities for our students in a way that is safe for everyone,” Appleton school board member Leah Olson said.
Klitzke says this is something she’ll always remember.
“We remember where our children stood when the world was in chaos is that they were punished for what the numbers of an entire community and their choices.”
The school board will continue to discuss the “Fully Virtual Plus” model at the next board meeting November 23rd.
