MADISON, WI (WTAQ) — A day after Election Day, a second day in a row of record breaking new COVID-19 cases.
State officials recorded 5,935 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, a day after over 5,700 people tested positive. This is in spite of a mask mandate that’s been in effect since August. DHS Secretary Designee Andrea Palm says, nevertheless, it’s working.
“When you look at states that have seen surges, they have taken these steps and others to slow the spread,” she told reporters Wednesday. “The more people that [mask] the more effective it is.”
Bureau of Infectious Diseases Dr. Ryan Westergaard says the state needs to do more.
“We’re not doing these things aggressively enough,” Westergaard said. “The strategies are there, the evidence is there, but it’s going to take a lot more than what we’re doing.”
There was a indoor capacity limit in place in Wisconsin, but an appeals court put it on hold last month. The state supreme court has refused to take up the issue.
