PESHTIGO, WI (WTAQ) — Students in the Peshtigo School District received an interesting knock on their doors on Wednesday.
Outside every family in the district–all 1,200 of them, found a fire extinguisher, with it, a note on how to use it, and a list of fire safety precautions to take.
The fire extinguishers were distributed as part of a donation to the district from Johnson Controls.
“One of their employees lost family members in a fire in Oconto last winter,” Peshtigo Superintendent Patrick Rau explained. “This is their opportunity to help support fire safety, to get that message out.”
That fire, which took place in January of last year, killed four people, including three children.
The 1,200 fire extinguishers are part of a larger donation of 12,000, which will be distributed to families in Menominee, Oconto, and Marinette Counties.
“I think it brings awareness to fire safety, and it definitely catches the eyes of the parents as well as the kids,” said Rau.
School maintenance staff went door to door dropping off the fire extinguishers on Wednesday.
