FISH CREEK, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Construction is underway at the Eagle Tower Observation Deck at Peninsula State Park in Fish Creek, and after months of work, the tower is starting to look like a tower.
“People have really been missing having a structure like this to come to, and enjoy, and be able to take in the great views across the bay, looking toward Ephraim and all that as well. So I think a lot of people are looking forward to it being restored and back in place,” said Steve Strucely, Friends of Peninsula State Park Business Manager.
Strucely tells FOX 11 the old tower was found to be unsafe and taken down in 2016.
The new design features an 850-foot long accessible boardwalk leading to an observation deck six stories in the air.
Friends group President Chris Holicek tells FOX 11 the visit should be an experience.
“You can just climb the tower. You can go up the ramp. You can stay on the ramp, and observe nature at different rest spots, and go up to different levels on the tower. Go underneath the tower.”
On Wednesday, crews bolted some of the large wooden beams into place. The boardwalk across the road was completed last week.
“It’s a unique feature. We don’t know of any other state park in Wisconsin, and very few maybe across the country that have that kind of feature,” said Strucely.
“I think it’s going to draw a lot of tourists to the area, and people who have been here, coming for years, and years, and years, really enjoying it again,” said Holicek.
The project cost about $3.4 million, with the friends group contributing $750,000.
Eagle Tower is scheduled to open in the spring.
