APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A parent in the Appleton Area School District has filed three statements of intent to circulate recall petitions involving three school board members.
Erik Hansen submitted the documents to the Wisconsin Elections Commission on Tuesday. They name Appleton school board president Kay Eggert, vice president Leah Olson, and treasurer James Bowman.

The language on each document says the school board members:
“willfully neglected to act on behalf of families in the Appleton Area School District. In addition, (their) negligence to ensure that Appleton Area School District provides the best educational opportunities to maximize the achievement of our students will have a significant negative and lasting effect on our school district, and the Appleton community.”
FOX 11 spoke with Hansen over the phone on Tuesday. He said the recall effort stems from a frustration that the Appleton school board is not listening to or working with parents on a plan to offer some kind of in-person schooling option. Appleton students have been learning on an all-virtual model for the entire year.
The Appleton school board has seven members. Hansen said state law prevents recall petitions from being filed against three of them. He said he did not file one against school board clerk Deb Truyman, claiming she is the only member who has made an effort to work with parents.
Appleton’s school board had a meeting on Monday to discuss what criteria to use when deciding whether to bring kids back into the classroom.
Hansen said signature collections will start once the Wisconsin Elections Commission approves the petition.
