APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The coronavirus pandemic forced organizers of the Community First Fox Cities Marathon to cancel the in-person race.
But on Sunday morning, which would have been race day for the full marathon, race organizers and officials spread out along several popular trails in the Fox Cities, and surprised runners and walkers on the trails, to cheer them on and show their support.
“We didn’t tell anyone. And the reaction from people is a little bit of surprise, but then they smile and they laugh, and many of them have stopped and talked to us about their experiences with our race, with any one of the events, so it’s been a great way to have some personal connections, be out here, and do what we love to do on marathon Sunday,” says Amanda Secor, chief of staff for Community First Credit Union, the title sponsor and managing entity of the Fox Cities Marathon, and a race organizer.
Organizers plan on having runners return to the start line in-person next year, which would be the 30th running of the race.
