MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ) — Democratic Presidential Candidate and former Vice President Joe Biden spoke at Manitowoc’s Wisconsin Aluminum Foundry on this (TUESDAY) afternoon to mark 200,000 COVID-19 deaths in the country.
Biden laid into President Donald Trump, accusing him of downplaying the coronavirus pandemic.
“When Donald Trump said he didn’t want to create a panic, he wasn’t just talking about health panic, he was focused on the stock market, because that would hurt his chances of being reelected,” Biden told a sparse crowd. “Due to Donald Trump’s lies and incompetence in the past six month, we’ve seen one of the gravest losses of American life in history, and as awful as the past 180 days have been, the next 90 days could be twice as bad.”
It was Biden’s second stop in Wisconsin in the past two weeks.
“We’ve been living with the pandemic so long I worry we’re risking becoming numb to the toll it’s taking on us and communities like this,” Biden said.
Biden’s reason for choosing Manitowoc county was alluded to during his speech: the county went for Obama in 2012 before going red in 2016, with many former Obama voters casting their ballots for President Trump.
“An awful lot of people in this county changed. I know a lot of you are frustrated and you don’t feel heard, I get it, but I promise you this: it will change with me,” said Biden.
Biden also promised to “bring back” American manufacturing during the event, touted a $15 minimum wage, and spoke of a large-scale infrastructure revitilization plan, something he’s spoken of elsewhere during the campaign.
The campaign event in Manitowoc was announced Sunday, but no location was given. Media had to live steam the event from the Biden campaign website. The number of people who attended isn’t clear.
