GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — A Green Bay alderman is suggesting the city purchase the East Town Mall, which was recently listed for sale.
Alderman Brian Johnson says it’s a really good deal.
“It was just recently listed for $1.9 million,” Johnson told WTAQ Monday. “With the affordable price that this has been presented at and the lack of progress that we’ve had on development in that area, it’s giving us an opportunity to take a look at this.”
Johnson says the site could be used to tackle a number of pressing issues, including redevelopment, affordable housing, an east side library, or to control area flooding.
“One of the things that’s been suggested are underground tanks to control some of that flooding,” said Johnson. “We can’t even begin to have that dialog if we don’t have any sort of site control.”
The building would likely not remain a mall. Johnson says it’s likely the mall’s interior, which has been largely vacant for years, would be torn down.
“I have zero interest in the city owning and managing a mall,” Johnson said.
Outlots on the property could also prove attractive for retail or restaurant developers.
Large retail stores connected to the mall, such as Aldi, Hobby Lobby, and Kohl’s, are separate properties and are not included in the deal.
The city is expected to discuss the issue at the next redevelopment board meeting.
