GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Packers President and CEO Mark Murphy says the team is working with area police agencies on getting body cameras.
Speaking during a virtual pep rally Saturday night, Murphy says the team is focusing on social justice changes that the team believes everyone can agree on, including expanded voter registration offerings and body cameras.
“We’re very supportive of our police department, but we also don’t support excessive force, police brutality,” said Murphy. “I think the body cams will be very helpful.
Murphy did not say whether the team would pay for the body cameras.
“It’s something that the police department and the police in Green Bay and Ashwaubenon and Brown County are all supportive of and it will be good for the community,” said Murphy.
Green Bay city leaders have recently indicated body cameras for its 180 officers would likely cost more than $1 million and will be discussed when the 2021 budget is being put together.
As for the Packers’ efforts to help people vote during the coronavirus pandemic, first reported in July that the Johnsonville Tailgate Village will act as a voting location in November. Murphy says it will also be a site for early in-person absentee voting, which runs October 20th through the 31st, according to the city’s website.
