GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Two American Red Cross volunteers left Green Bay Saturday morning, heading out west to help those affected by the wildfires.
The organization says it could use more volunteers to help in these disaster-response situations.
“It’s a symbol of hope, it’s a symbol of health and safety, to a lot of folks,” Local Red Cross executive director Steve Hansen said. “We have two awesome volunteers that are preparing our emergency response vehicle, and will be heading out shortly to Portland, Oregon.”
“I did a MapQuest and it’s 28 hours driving. And so, the two of us will be trading off driving responsibilities,” volunteer Gary Geisler said.
Geisler and Patricia Peterson are on a mission… driving into an area that most people are trying to get out of. They are going to feed people who’ve been displaced from their homes, and firefighters who’ve been working without rest.
“And essentially, to deliver hope, to a lot of people that have been displaced from the fires,” Hansen added.
FOX 11 asked Peterson when she found out she was going out west.
“Uh.. yesterday,” she replied. “I put in my availability on Thursday and they notified me yesterday that I would be deploying.”
Patricia will miss the Packers game.. but some things are more important.
Hansen agreed, saying: “We will not leave the area until we are no longer needed, [that’s] the bottom line.”
The organization receives almost all of its funds from donations.
