PESHTIGO, WI (WTAQ) — The Peshtigo School district is going through the first big test of its COVID-19 plans.
Two students at Peshtigo Middle and High School have tested positive for COVID-19, a week after classes began last Monday.
Superintendent Patrick Rau says the district has notified students who were in close proximity.
“We’re happy to say that the number was very minimal, due to the fact that our teachers were conscientious and stayed their distance away,” Rau told WTAQ on Tuesday.
Just two other students were quarantined. Rau informed district parents of the positive tests in an email.
Rau called it a successful test of the district’s COVID-19 mitigation plan.
“I couldn’t imagine it going better,” he said. “It gave everybody hope that if we do follow the guidelines…we can keep the risk low.”
In person instruction will continue, but there are plans in place to go virtual if they have to.
“If we would have 20 to 30 percent of our students absent because of illness, COVID-19 symptoms or quarantine, then we would look at going to a virtual model,” Rau explained.
Many other schools return to class this week.
