GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The Brown County Board of Supervisors approved a resolution to acquire 4.54 acres of land on Nicolet Drive for a public park and boat landing.
After nearly two hours of public comment, the board passed the resolution 22-3.
Brown County Parks and Recreation Director Matt Kriese tells FOX 11 the bay of Green Bay one of the community’s greatest assets.
“The fishing industry on the bay itself generates 263.8 million annually.”
The parks department wanted to give people more public options to get out on the water.
“There’s limited access. Water access for those of us that don’t live on the water to the bay. We have Bay Shore Park, we have Suamico boat landing and then there’s some other dead end roads and things there, undeveloped areas,” Kriese said.
While the parks department said this boat landing is a need, neighbors tells FOX 11 it’s a want.
“It’s not needed. It’s strictly fishermen who want the facility but there’s not a need. I’m willing to bet they’ll be lucky to get ten trailers a day in this facility,” Green Bay resident William Acker said.
William Acker lives right next to the old Eagles Nest.
He tells FOX 11 most of the activity he sees are kayakers and paddle-boarders
“The county could purchase this land, find out later that they don’t have the money,” Acker said.
Kriese says the public portion of the project will be funded by grant dollars.
“That acquisition is at 1.05 million dollars… much below appraised values and when we get into development phases that would be determined and driven by the master plan but we estimate well under 2 million dollars for the development aspect.”
No specific timeline for a boat landing development has been announced.
