FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The Fond du Lac City Council did not pass a resolution to stop a major makeover at Lakeside Park, meaning the project will go on as planned.
The changes would include a new restaurant, museum, boardwalk, piers and outdoor music venue.
A group called “Friends of Lakeside Park” has been fighting the project for months.
It says these changes would interfere with the park’s iconic lighthouse peninsula. Developers say the lighthouse isn’t going to be touched.
“The previously approved renovation plan and concepts that are within the Lakeside Park master plan are incredible and thoughtful examples of how impressive the future of Fond du Lac can be,” Fond du Lac resident Bernadette Erickson said.
“There’s two things for you to look at,” according to Friends of Lakeside Park Steering Committee member John Papenheim.
“Do an advisory referendum in November and you write the wording to the referendum, or we force a binding referendum in April and we write the wording? Which do you choose? Also, vote responsibly using taxpayer money and delay this pavilion project. $1.2 million is on the line here.”
The project’s full cost is estimated at between $8 million and $10 million.
Fond du Lac area businesses have pledged more than $5 million.
