MARINETTE, WI (WTAQ) – A local incumbent state representative is set to head back to the general election in November.
Republican Representative John Nygren took an early and decisive victory over challenger Andi Rich in Tuesday’s partisan primary election.
“Regardless of who you’re running against, you need to take it seriously, you need to work hard – and you need to remind voters who you are, what you stand for, and what you believe,” Nygren says, “She ran as a Republican, but I think if you actually checked her positions on issues – she really wasn’t a true conservative. I think that’s one of the reasons the results turned out the way they did.”
At the end of the night, with all 20 precincts reporting, Nygren led 5,189 to 1,032. That’s about 83% to 17%.
“There’s obviously a sense of pride, but the reason you do the job is to represent the people who send you there,” Nygren tells WTAQ News, “It is really just a reaffirmation of the work that you’ve done and the fact that the people trust you to continue that work.”
While Nygren says he has considered calling it a legislative career – he says there is simply too much happening to leave unfinished work on the table.
“The issues before us are pretty serious and it’s going to take some serious effort on my behalf, as well as other leaders in the state. It’s time to bring people together and get things done,” Nygren says, “The position we’re in as a state right now – or as a country – with the pandemic and our financial situation and unemployment and all of those things make it too difficult for me to walk away.”
Nygren will face Democrat Karl Jaeger in November.
