GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The trial started Monday for Jacob Cayer, who allegedly killed his ex-girlfriend and her mother at a Hobart home in 2016.
Cayer allegedly killed Sabrina Teague and Heesun ‘Sunny’ Teague at a Hobart home on June 7, 2016. Joel Kennedy was also stabbed in the incident. Cayer has pleaded not guilty, and not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect.
Both sides laid out a preview of their case in opening statements.
Brown County District Attorney David Lasee noted Cayer was arrested hiding near the scene and gave a detailed confession.
“What you will hear is that on June 7, 2016, Jacob Cayer turned 1368 Riverdale Drive in the village of Hobart into a real-life horror movie,” Lasee said. “This is a real-life horror movie, ladies and gentlemen. It is not a mystery. We know exactly who caused these events. We know exactly what happened. Unlike many cases, this is a not situation where it’s a ‘whodunit.’ ”
Defense attorney Anthony Cotton reminded jurors that Cayer does not have to prove himself innocent.
“The most important thing, from our perspective, folks, is that you keep an open mind throughout these proceedings. We hope that all of you can follow your oath very seriously by remembering that Mr. Cayer is presumed innocent at all stages of the proceeding,” Cotton said. “And I would urge you remember there’s always a bigger picture at play that we believe will, by the end of thewse proceedings, by the end of the week become evident to you folks and you will find Mr. Cayer not guilty.”
After the opening statements, the jury heard the 911 call. The first witness was John Kennedy, who was also stabbed in the attack.
The trial is scheduled to last all week. If Cayer if convicted of the murders, a second phase of the trial would determine if Cayer should be held responsible for his acts due to his mental condition at the time.
