GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — 20 parking spaces in downtown Green Bay have been turned into space for people to eat outside.
The Downtown Dining Room is located on the 200 block of N. Adams street on the west side of the parking lot.
“You know we’ve identified that a lot of businesses, a lot of the restaurants on Washington Street don’t have access to outdoor dining,” Downtown Green Bay Inc. marketing manager Kathryn Kroll says.
Downtown Green Bay Inc. hopes this project will be another way for bars and restaurants to offer additional outdoor seating.
“So this is going to be a great physically distant space where you can grab some food or pack up your own picnic and you can come enjoy it downtown,” Kroll says.
Picnic tables and sanitation stations are set up in the parking lot.
“We’ve got some nice shade that we’re going to set up, we’re beautifying it with some greenery and flowers,” Kroll says.
A ribbon cutting ceremony formally opened the new outdoor space.
Nearby businesses like Nectar are thankful for the extra seating.
“I don’t have much outdoor seating on my own so it’s really given me the opportunity to offer people an outdoor space where they can sit, enjoy their meal, get some sunshine and enjoy fresh air,” NECTAR owner Brent Prechtl says.
Downtown Green Bay Inc. also says that the loss of parking in the Adams Street parking lot should not be an issue.
“We think that these 20 parking spaces are being put to better use right now. There’s still plenty of street parking, there is still parking in the Adams Street lot and of course the Cherry Street lot just across the way as well,” Kroll says.
Kroll says this is a community collaboration.
“We’ve got great partnership with the city to help us make this happen, and we also received some neighborhood grant funding from the Brown County United way so it’s really a great community effort,” Kroll says.
